Energy
that comes directly from the sun is know as
solar energy. This term also includes indirect energy forms, such as
ocean thermal gradients, biomass, wind and falling or flowing water.
All of these are developed when the sun’s energy interacts
with
this planet. Moreover, any form of energy radiated by the sun,
including light, radio waves and x-rays, are part of what we refer to
as solar energy.
The future of solar energy
truly depends on how much
effort people are willing to put into the research and investigation of
alterative sources of energy. At the
present time, the future of solar
energy looks very bright, since there are many different projects
currently in the works which are designed and aimed at making solar
energy a major resource in the years to come.
Issues such as global warming, fuel shortages, pollution, problems with nuclear power, and the deregulation of electric power are all considered capable of dramatically changing energy-using technologies in the world; and, solar power is considered one of the major technologies that are available for producing power.
About Solar Power
During the day, there is a constant supply of radiation coming to us from the sun. Although the amount of radiation is very significant to begin with, presently low cost commercial solid-state solar cells are only able to convert about 11 percent of this solar radiation into energy.
Because sunlight is free, solar power becomes a very appealing choice, especially in those countries which have difficulties buying fuel. However, one of the major downfalls to solar power is that when the sun goes down, there is obviously no electricity being produced; and, this situation can cause big problems.
Theoretically, the majority of thermal energy that is required by our global societies could come from solar energy. However, practically, this possibility has been limited by solar energy’s being considered too intermittent of a source. On the other hand, this situation is likely to change dramatically as the prices of existing fuels continue to rise.
In the past century, we have started to use solar energy very effectively, and it is very likely that we will end up increasing its use even more in the future. This is a very optimistic outcome and the future of solar energy looks bright. It is very encouraging that the future of solar energy looks good, since this source of energy is actually one of the few natural resources that can provide energy and electricity and still not cause any harm to the environment or be too expensive to use.
